Bougainville Copper Ltd
IMPORTANT: as of June 2026 the Autonomous Bougainville Government suspended and subordinated Bougainville Copper's exploration licence (BCL's own wording; EL01 rights "now suspended and subordinated to LSML-01") and granted a competing 25-year mining lease over the historic Panguna deposit to a rival state-controlled entity, Bougainville Minerals Limited (ABG holds 74%). On 7 Aug 2026 ABG further authorised India's Lloyds Metals & Energy to conduct preparatory works and feasibility activities at Panguna as BML's "Approved Development Partner", and by ~11 Aug 2026 local landowners had publicly warned both BCL and Lloyds to halt unauthorised site activity. BCL has said only that it would form a board committee to examine legal/strategic options -- commentary ties a possible filing to the September 2026 PNG parliamentary session on Bougainville independence, but no confirmed statutory deadline exists. This is an active, unresolved control dispute over the company's core asset, not settled fact. Bougainville Copper holds historic rights to the giant Panguna copper-gold deposit (5.3Mt contained copper, 19.3Moz gold resource) in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, idle since 1989 due to civil conflict. Share price (AUD $0.185, Aug 12 2026) is down sharply on the license news. Cash is left unstated here (not confidently found); debt is stated as $0 per recent AGM commentary that the company is debt-free, which is unconfirmed against a formal balance sheet.
Notable vs. Peers
- Jurisdiction risk score of 2/10 is meaningfully riskier than the peer average of 7.7/10.
- Trading within 0% of its 52-week low — weak recent price momentum.
Lifecycle Milestones
A relative ranking of how closely this company matches the profile of juniors that have actually been acquired — not a probability, and not a reason to buy. Acquisitions are rare: only a few dozen significant deals happen a year across a universe of thousands of juniors, so even a high score here describes a long shot. The strongest signal the underlying research identifies — whether a major already holds a JV, earn-in, or 5–19.9% strategic stake — isn't tracked yet and is absent from this score.

ouncesFound = 19.3 Moz Au (combined Indicated+Inferred, 2015 JORC MRE), written in preference to a copper figure because grade-value math shows gold is co-dominant (~51% of in-situ value) with copper (~49%), not a by-product, despite the COPPER commodity tag. Cu content is 5.3 Mt / 11.66 billion lb, left out of this field. Flagged for human review -- see MetricSource note for full reasoning and the Indicated-only split limitation.
